The Hungarian Studies Association of Canada (HSAC) organized its annual conference in Toronto between May 31 – June 2, 2025, under the theme: “Rethinking Coexistence: Hungary, Hungarianness, and Finding Commonality in Diversity.”

The conference brought together scholars, researchers, and educators from across the world to explore cultural change, identity, and the possibilities of finding common ground in diversity. The event provided an inspiring platform for dialogue on contemporary challenges and future directions in Hungarian studies.

Among the distinguished speakers was Erika Sólyom — Linguist, Independent Scholar, Writer, and ESL/HFL Teacher at Avicenna International College, Budapest. Her presentation, “Language Change in Hungarian: The New Use of the ‘be’ Coverb”, examined the emergence of innovative verbal forms. She highlighted how these neologisms reflect both linguistic creativity and broader changes in Hungarian language use across everyday communication, youth culture, online platforms, and even political discourse.

The conference once again confirmed HSAC’s role as a key forum for advancing research, encouraging academic exchange, and fostering a deeper understanding of Hungarian language, culture, and identity in a global context.
